SUBJECT: Workforce Solutions Upper Rio Grande

Workforce Solutions Upper Rio Grande is a non-profit organization that for the last nine years has been trying to improve our region by enhancing the workforce to create much better standards of living for the people in the community. Their mission statement is “To provide skilled workers for employers by advancing education, employment and economic development opportunities.” Just like the other Texas Workforce development boards, this is done by providing a series of services that help the people develop better skills related to the job market place, which are available to the public. Although tied to the state level Texas Workforce Solutions, Upper Rio Grande is locally owned and focuses only in the regional counties of El Paso, Brewster, Culberson, Hudspeth, Jeff Davis, and Presidio. In the hierarchal system, the organization is run by a Chief Elected Official, which is El Paso’s Mayor John Cook, and then subdivides power between six Regional Officials, which run each individual sector.

The agency appears to be very well involved with the community. They have many different locations, all situated throughout the region to be much more accessible, plus many open phone numbers to contact the many different departments in the agency. Most of the cases are handled personally, so the individual benefits from a person to person interaction. Much of the population speaks mainly or only Spanish, so the organization is wholly bilingual, facilitating the communication between their representatives and any Spanish speaker. Furthermore, they actively participate outdoors too: they tend to make career fairs and rallies to encourage people to attend and participate in their programs. Moreover, they have many forms of media and advertisement, like newspaper ads, radio broadcasts, and commercials, not to mention a very well designed web page, which includes a wide array of newsletters and info packages of all the services available. The layout is easy to follow, with tabs pertaining to each specific area of interest, and the information is set in a simple cohesive manner. The graphics are meticulously designed, but are not over excessive, and therefore appealing to the viewer’s eye.

The organization understands the hardships one must go through when being in penury or finding a job, especially when an individual does not have the necessary abilities or resources, so their main goal is to help individuals as much as they can so they could lead a better life, which in return will reflect towards the community as a whole. The agency offers a wide variety of services, including: employment opportunities for any job seeker (Ex: unemployed, minor), training in job relevant skills such as interviewing or basic computer use, or provide information concerning support programs to any qualifying applicant (Ex: low income families, veterans, immigrants). Since most of the programs offered are incredibly simple to qualify for, the individual’s only requirement is to apply. All of these services are entirely helpful and truly efficient; many are the ones that have benefited from these gratuitous opportunities. This in turn has made the organization successful, and consequently profited everyone in the community.
